Ah, those whose minds are made pure by discernment born of the knowledge of Brahman do a hard thing: wholly free of longing, they let go of wealth even while it serves their enjoyment. We cannot give up even things we possess only by wishing, things never gained before, not gained now, and with no firm hope of ever gaining.
Meaning today and context
Much of our suffering is over things we don't even have: imagined futures, wished-for possessions. Letting go of fantasies is easier than letting go of riches, yet we often can't manage even that.
Bhartrihari contrasts the wise, who give up wealth they actually have, with himself, who cannot give up even things he only wishes for.
