Vairagya Shataka 1.14

1.14 Bhartrihari

dhanyānāṃ giri-kandareṣu vasatāṃ jyotiḥ paraṃ dhyāyatām | ānandāśru-jalaṃ pibanti śakunā niḥśaṅkamaṅkeśayāḥ | asmākaṃ tu manorathoparacita-prāsāda-vāpī-taṭa- | krīḍā-kānana-keli-kautuka-juṣāmāyuḥ paraṃ kṣīyate ||

Blessed are those who live in mountain caves meditating on the supreme light: birds sit fearlessly in their laps and drink the water of their tears of bliss. As for us, our life wastes away while we amuse ourselves in daydreams, at the banks of pools of palaces built by fancy, in pleasure-gardens of make-believe.

Bhartrihari praises the renunciate's life here. It is not advice to leave family, work or responsibilities; for most people it points to inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Daydreaming about the perfect house, trip or life can quietly use up the only life we have. The alternative is not a cave but real attention to what is here.

Bhartrihari contrasts blessed meditators in mountain caves, so still that birds drink their tears of joy, with people like himself whose life drains away in daydreams.
