Vairagya Shataka 1.15

1.15 Bhartrihari

bhikṣāśanaṃ tadapi nīrasameka-bāraṃ | śayyā ca bhūḥ parijano nija-deha-mātram | vastraṃ viśīrṇa-śata-khaṇḍa-mayī ca kanthā | hā hā tathāpi viṣayā na parityajanti ||

Food begged once a day, and tasteless; the ground for a bed; no attendants but one's own body; for clothing a worn-out quilt of a hundred patches. Alas, alas, even so the sense-objects do not let go.

Bhartrihari praises the renunciate's life here. It is not advice to leave family, work or responsibilities; for most people it points to inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

Giving up things outwardly does not end craving inwardly. Decluttering, fasting from screens or moving away won't free us unless the mind itself lets go.

Bhartrihari describes the barest life of a renunciate and laments that even then the pull of sense-objects remains.
