Vairagya Shataka 1.16

1.16 Bhartrihari

stanau māṃsa-granthī kanaka-kalaśāvityupamitau | mukhaṃ śleṣmāgāraṃ tadapi ca śaśāṅkena tulitam | sravan-mūtra-klinnaṃ kari-vara-śira-spardhi jaghanaṃ | muhurnindyaṃ rūpaṃ kavi-jana-viśeṣairguru-kṛtam ||

Breasts, mere lumps of flesh, are likened to golden pitchers; the face, a house of phlegm, is compared to the moon; the loins, damp with flowing urine, are said to rival the brow of a great elephant. A form deserving only blame has been made grand by certain poets.

This verse describes the body with disgust to cool desire, from the renunciate viewpoint of its time. It must never be used to demean women, and it is not for anyone struggling with body image, an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; the teaching is about craving, not self-contempt. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Read historically, this is a renunciate's device for seeing through idealised images of desire. Today its honest use is narrow: noticing how much of craving is built from poetry and imagination, not from the person.

Bhartrihari mocks the love-poets' praise of a woman's body by describing the same parts in terms of flesh and bodily fluids, to cool desire.
