Vairagya Shataka 1.17

1.17 Bhartrihari

eko rāgiṣu rājate priyatamā-dehārdha-hārī haro | nīrāgeṣu jano vimukta-lalanāsaṅgo na yasmātparaḥ | durvāra-smara-bāṇa-pannaga-viṣa-vyābiddha-mugdho janaḥ | śeṣaḥ kāma-viḍambitānna viṣayānbhoktuṃ na moktuṃ kṣamaḥ ||

Among lovers Hara alone shines, who carries his beloved as half his body; among the dispassionate none is above him, free from attachment to women. The rest of people, stupefied, pierced by the snake-venom of Love's irresistible arrows and mocked by desire, are able neither to enjoy sense-pleasures nor to give them up.

This reflects the renunciate viewpoint of its time and is about one's own craving. It must never be used to blame, demean or control women.

Meaning today and context

The worst place is the middle: half-indulging, half-guilty, never at peace. Whether one lives fully in love or in renunciation, it takes wholeheartedness and mastery, not being dragged around by desire.

Bhartrihari praises Shiva as supreme both among the passionate (he shares half his body with Parvati) and among the dispassionate (he burned Kama), while ordinary people, struck by desire, can neither enjoy nor renounce.
