Let the moth fall into the fierce flame, not knowing it burns; let the fish, in ignorance, swallow the bait fixed on a hook. But we, knowing full well, still do not let go of desires tangled with nets of calamity. Alas, how deep is the power of delusion!

Meaning today and context
Knowing a habit is harmful is not the same as being free of it. Smoking, scrolling, toxic relationships: we often know exactly what they cost. The verse names that gap honestly as delusion's grip.
Bhartrihari compares himself with the moth and the fish: they at least act from ignorance, while we cling to harmful desires knowing full well what they cost.
