Vairagya Shataka 1.2

1.2 Bhartrihari

bhrāntaṃ deśamaneka-durga-viṣamaṃ prāptaṃ na kiñcitphalaṃ | tyaktvā jāti-kulābhimānamucitaṃ sevā kṛtā niṣphalā | bhuktaṃ māna-vivarjitaṃ para-gṛheṣvāśaṅkayā kākavat | tṛṣṇe jṛmbhasi pāpa-karma-piśune nādyāpi santuṣyasi ||

I wandered through lands hard to cross, full of fortresses, and gained nothing. I gave up the pride of birth and family that was proper to me and served others, all for nothing. Like a crow I ate in other people's houses, without honour and in fear. O Craving, you who egg me on to wrong deeds, you keep growing; even now you are not content.

Meaning today and context

Craving does not shrink when we feed it; it asks for more, and we pay in self-respect. Seeing that clearly is the first step to stopping the chase.

Bhartrihari addresses Craving (tṛṣṇā) itself, listing the humiliations he has suffered chasing gain, and asks why it is still not satisfied.
