A lofty house, sons esteemed by the good, countless riches, a gracious wife and fresh youth: thinking the world imperishable, the man stupefied by ignorance enters the prison-house of worldly life. But the blessed one, seeing all of it as broken in a moment, renounces.
Bhartrihari praises the renunciate's life here. It is not advice to leave family, work or responsibilities; for most people it points to inner detachment.
Meaning today and context
Having a good life is not the problem; believing it will last forever is. Seeing that everything changes lets us enjoy and care for it without being imprisoned by it.
Bhartrihari contrasts the deluded man who, having house, sons, wealth, a good wife and youth, takes the world as permanent, with the blessed one who sees it as momentary.
