Vairagya Shataka 1.23

1.23 Bhartrihari

puṇye grāme vane vā mahati sita-paṭac-channa-pāliṃ kapāliṃ | hyādāya nyāya-garbha-dvija-huta-huta-bhugdhūma-dhūmropakaṇṭhe | dvāraṃ dvāraṃ praviṣṭo varamudara-darī-pūraṇāya kṣudhārto | mānī prāṇaiḥ sanātho na punaranudinaṃ tulya-kulyeṣu dīnaḥ ||

Better that a proud man, hungry, carrying a begging bowl whose rim is covered with a white cloth, should go door to door in a holy village or a great forest, near houses grey with the smoke of fires where learned brahmins make offerings, just to fill the cave of his belly, than that he, while still alive, should be wretched day after day among his equals and kin.

Praise of living on alms belongs to the renunciate tradition. It is not advice to give up work or to beg, nor to leave family or responsibilities; for most people it means freedom from dependence on others' favour. The mention of brahmins describes the setting; worth is by conduct, never by birth.

Meaning today and context

Being dependent on peers and relatives, and feeling humiliated by it every day, can hurt more than plain hardship. The verse values independence and dignity over comfort.

Bhartrihari says it is better for a proud man to beg with a bowl from door to door in a holy village or forest than to be humbled daily before his own equals and kin.
