Vairagya Shataka 1.28

1.28 Bhartrihari

ye vartante dhana-pati-puraḥ prārthanā-duḥkha-bhājo | ye cālpatvaṃ dadhati viṣayākṣepa-paryāpta-buddheḥ | teṣāmantaḥ-sphurita-hasitaṃ vāsarāṇi smareyaṃ | dhyāna-cchede śikhari-kuhara-grāva-śayyā-niṣaṇṇaḥ ||

Those who stand before the lords of wealth, suffering the pain of begging, and those whose understanding is small, content to be pulled about by sense-objects: may I, seated on a stone bed in a mountain cave, in a pause from meditation, recall their days with a smile flickering within.

Bhartrihari praises the renunciate's life here. It is not advice to leave family, work or responsibilities; for most people it points to inner detachment.

Meaning today and context

There is a freedom in looking back on old anxieties, chasing favours, chasing pleasures, from a place of calm and smiling at them. The wish is to outgrow them, not to look down on anyone.

Bhartrihari imagines himself in a mountain cave, pausing from meditation and smiling inwardly as he recalls the days of those who beg before the rich or whose minds are spent on sense-objects.
