Those who are always delighted by contentment, their joys are not made different by wealth; and the others, whose minds are crowded with greed for money, their craving is not destroyed by it. So for whom, and why, and as what kind of station did Fate create riches? Mount Meru, whose golden glory ends within itself, does not appeal to me.
Meaning today and context
If you are content, more money adds little joy; if you are greedy, no amount is enough. Contentment, not wealth, is what actually decides happiness.
Bhartrihari argues that wealth serves no one: the contented are already happy, the greedy are never satisfied; so even Meru's gold, which only glorifies itself, does not attract him.
