Vairagya Shataka 1.31

1.31 Bhartrihari

bhoge rogabhayaṃ kule cyuti-bhayaṃ vitte nṛpālādbhayaṃ | māne dainya-bhayaṃ bale ripu-bhayaṃ rūpe jarāyā bhayam | śāstre vādibhayaṃ guṇe khala-bhayaṃ kāye kṛtāntādbhayaṃ | sarvaṃ vastu bhayānvitaṃ bhuvi nṛṇāṃ vairāgyamevābhayam ||

In enjoyment, the fear of disease; in high family, the fear of a fall; in wealth, the fear of the king; in honour, the fear of humiliation; in strength, the fear of enemies; in beauty, the fear of old age; in learning, the fear of debaters; in virtue, the fear of the wicked; in the body, the fear of death. Everything on earth for human beings is shadowed by fear; dispassion alone is fearlessness.

Meaning today and context

Whatever we cling to, we fear losing: money, health, status, looks, reputation. Holding them more lightly is the only real way out of that fear.

Bhartrihari's famous verse on fear: every good thing in life carries its own fear; only dispassion is free of it.
