Vairagya Shataka 1.34

1.34 Bhartrihari

bhogāstuṅgataraṅga-bhaṅga-taralāḥ prāṇāḥ kṣaṇa-dhvaṃsinaḥ | stokānyeva dināni yauvana-sukhaṃ sphūrtiḥ priyāsu sthitā | tat-saṃsāramasārameva nikhilaṃ buddhvā budhā bodhakā | lokānugraha-peśalena manasā yatnaḥ samādhīyatām ||

Pleasures are as unsteady as the breaking of tall waves; life-breaths perish in a moment; the joy of youth lasts only a few days; and the thrill of lovers is fleeting. So, knowing the whole of worldly life to be without essence, O wise ones who awaken others, set your effort to work with a mind gentle in kindness to the world.

Meaning today and context

Seeing that life is short should not make us cold; it should make us use our time well, for our own growth and in kindness to others.

Bhartrihari tells the wise, who teach others, to see the world as essenceless and to strive, with a mind gentle in kindness to the world, toward liberation.
