Vairagya Shataka 1.35

1.35 Bhartrihari

bhogā megha-vitāna-madhya-vilasat-saudāminī-cañcalā | āyurvāyu-vighaṭṭitābja-paṭalī-līnāmbuvadbhaṅguram | līlā yauvana-lālasāstanubhṛtāmityākalayya drutaṃ | yoge dhairya-samādhi-siddhi-sulabhe buddhiṃ vidadhvaṃ budhāḥ ||

Pleasures flicker like lightning playing in a canopy of clouds; life is as fragile as water clinging to a cluster of lotus leaves shaken by the wind; the longings of youth in embodied beings are passing play. Realise this quickly, O wise ones, and set your mind on yoga, which is easily won through steadiness and absorbed concentration.

Meaning today and context

Don't wait for a crisis to start working on your inner life. Steadiness and regular practice make it reachable, and time is shorter than it feels.

Bhartrihari urges the wise to turn their minds quickly to yoga, seeing how fleeting pleasures, life and youthful longings are.
