Vairagya Shataka 1.36

1.36 Bhartrihari

āyuḥ kallola-lolaṃ katipaya-divasa-sthāyinī yauvana-śrīr | arthāḥ saṅkalpa-kalpā ghana-samaya-taḍid-vibhramā bhoga-pūgāḥ | kaṇṭhāśleṣopagūḍhaṃ tadapi ca na ciraṃ yatpriyābhiḥ praṇītaṃ | brahmaṇyāsakta-cittā bhavata bhavamayāmbhodhi-pāraṃ tarītum ||

Life is unsteady as a wave; the glow of youth lasts a few days; wealth is like a passing thought; heaps of pleasures are flashes of lightning in the rainy season; even the embrace around the neck given by the beloved does not last long. Set your minds on Brahman, to cross to the far shore of the ocean of fearful existence.

Meaning today and context

Money, love, youth, life: all of it is precious and none of it stays. Anchoring ourselves in something deeper keeps us from drowning when they change.

Bhartrihari lists the fleetingness of life, youth, wealth and love, and urges people to fix their minds on Brahman to cross the ocean of worldly existence.
