Vairagya Shataka 1.39

1.39 Bhartrihari

bhogā bhaṅgura-vṛttayo bahuvidhāstaireva cāyaṃ bhavas | tatkasyeha kṛte paribhramata re lokāḥ kṛtaṃ ceṣṭitaiḥ | āśā-pāśa-śatopaśānti-viśadaṃ cetaḥ-samādhīyatāṃ | kāmotpatti-vaśātsvadhāmani yadi śraddheyamasmad-vacaḥ ||

Pleasures, of many kinds, are fragile by nature, and of them alone this worldly existence is made. For whose sake, then, do you wander about here, O people? Enough of these strivings! If our words are to be trusted, let the mind, made clear by the calming of hope's hundred nooses, be settled in its own abode, where desire is cut off at its root.

Meaning today and context

We run endlessly for pleasures that don't last. Calming the many hopes that tug at us lets the mind rest in itself, which is where peace is found.

Bhartrihari asks people why they wander about chasing fragile pleasures, and urges them to settle the mind in its own abode, freed from the nooses of hope.
