Intent on pleasing them, I somehow bore the talk of wicked men; holding back my tears inside, I even laughed with an empty heart; I folded my hands before men whose minds were stiffened by wealth. O Hope, you vain hope, how much more will you make me dance?
Meaning today and context
Hoping for a favour from someone powerful can make us swallow insults and smile falsely, until we no longer recognise ourselves. The verse asks us to notice who is pulling the strings: our own hope.
Bhartrihari addresses Hope (āśā), recalling how he swallowed insults, faked smiles and bowed to arrogant rich men to win their favour.
