Vairagya Shataka 1.48

1.48 Bhartrihari

vayaṃ yebhyo jātāścira-parigatā eva khalu te | samaṃ yaiḥ saṃvṛddhāḥ smṛti-viṣayatāṃ te'pi gamitāḥ | idānīmete smaḥ pratidivasamāsanna-patanā | gatāstulyāvasthāṃ sikatilanadī-tīra-tarubhiḥ ||

Those from whom we were born have long since departed; those with whom we grew up have also become mere memories. Now we ourselves are such that our fall draws nearer day by day: we have come to the same state as trees on the bank of a sandy river.

If you have lost someone, your grief is real and deserves time; the verse does not dismiss mourning. If thoughts of death weigh on you, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

As parents and old friends pass, we sense our own turn approaching. Facing this honestly can bring urgency to what matters and tenderness toward those still here.

Bhartrihari reflects that his parents are long gone, his childhood companions are memories, and he himself now stands near his fall, like a tree on a sandy riverbank.
