Vairagya Shataka 1.49

1.49 Bhartrihari

āyurvarṣa-śataṃ nṛṇāṃ parimitaṃ rātrau tad-ardhaṃ gataṃ | tasyārdhasya parasya cārdhamaparaṃ bālatva-vṛddhatvayoḥ | śeṣaṃ vyādhi-viyoga-duḥkha-sahitaṃ sevādibhirnīyate | jīve vārita-raṅga-cañcalatare saukhyaṃ kutaḥ prāṇinām ||

The life of human beings is measured at a hundred years; half of it goes by at night; of the other half, half again goes in childhood and old age; the rest is spent in service and the like, along with illness, separation and sorrow. In a life more unsteady than ripples on water, where is happiness for living beings?

Meaning today and context

Count honestly how much of life is truly ours to live freely, and it is startlingly little. That makes each free hour precious, and worth spending on what matters.

Bhartrihari does the arithmetic of a hundred-year life: half lost in sleep, much of the rest in childhood and old age, the remainder in illness, separation and service. Where is happiness?
