kṣaṇaṃ bālo bhūtvā kṣaṇamapi yuvā kāma-rasikaḥ | kṣaṇaṃ vittairhīnaḥ kṣaṇamapi ca sampūrṇa-vibhavaḥ | jarā-jīrṇairaṅgairnaṭa iva balī-maṇḍita-tanūr | naraḥ saṃsārānte viśati yamadhānīya-vanikām ||

For a moment a child, for a moment a youth delighting in love; for a moment without money, for a moment full of riches; then, limbs worn out by age, body decked with wrinkles, like an actor man enters, at the end of the play of worldly life, behind the curtain of Yama's city.

Meaning today and context

We play many roles: child, lover, struggler, success, elder. None of them is all of who we are, and the play ends for everyone. Holding roles lightly makes both good and bad scenes easier to bear.

Bhartrihari pictures a human life as an actor's quick costume changes, child, lover, pauper, rich man, old man, before he exits behind the curtain of Death.
