You are a king; we too stand tall in the pride of wisdom gained by serving our teachers. You are famous for your riches; poets spread our fame in every direction. So in honour and wealth the distance between us two is not great. If you turn your face from us, we too want nothing at all from you.
Meaning today and context
Learning and character are a wealth of their own. When someone powerful treats you as small, you need not beg for their approval; you can keep your dignity and simply stop wanting anything from them.
Bhartrihari, speaking as a learned poet, addresses a proud king who has ignored him: each of them has his own kind of greatness.
