We are content here with bark garments, you with fine silk. The contentment is the same; the difference makes no difference. Let him be poor whose craving is vast. When the mind is content, who is rich and who is poor?
Meaning today and context
Comparing what we own with what others own keeps us feeling poor. Real poverty is endless wanting; a satisfied mind is rich whatever it has.
Bhartrihari to the king: contentment, not possessions, decides who is rich and who is poor.
