Vairagya Shataka 1.59

1.59 Bhartrihari

mṛt-piṇḍo jala-rekhayā valayitaḥ sarvo'pyayaṃ nanvaṇuḥ | svāṃśīkṛtya sa eva saṅgara-śatai rājñāṃ gaṇā bhuñjate | ye dadyurdadato'thavā kimaparaṃ kṣudrā daridraṃ bhṛśaṃ | dhigdhiktānpuruṣādhamāndhanakaṇānvāñchanti tebhyo'pi ye ||

This whole earth is only a lump of clay ringed by a line of water, surely a mere atom. Kings in their hordes enjoy it after making it their own through hundreds of battles. Petty as they are, they might give, or not give, to the poor; what more? Shame, shame on those lowest of men who beg even from them for grains of wealth.

The scorn is for flattery and greed, not for anyone who asks for help in genuine need. Asking for help is not shameful.

Meaning today and context

What people fight hardest for is often very small seen from a wider view. Bowing to such people for scraps costs more in self-respect than it gains.

Bhartrihari describes the earth as a speck fought over by kings, and scorns those who beg crumbs from such kings.
