sa jātaḥ ko'pyāsīnmadana-ripuṇā mūrdhni dhavalaṃ | kapālaṃ yasyoccairvinihitamalaṅkāra-vidhaye | nṛbhiḥ prāṇa-trāṇa-pravaṇa-matibhiḥ kaiścidadhunā | namadbhiḥ kaḥ puṃsāmayamatula-darpa-jvara-bharaḥ ||

There was once someone truly born, whose white skull Shiva, enemy of the love-god, set high on his head as an ornament. But now, what is this unequalled fever of pride in men who are bowed to by a few people whose only thought is to save their own lives?

Meaning today and context

Respect given out of fear or need is not real honour. Being flattered by people who depend on you is no reason to think highly of yourself.

Bhartrihari recalls the legend of a great being whose skull Shiva wears as an ornament, and mocks the pride of men today who are honoured only by those seeking protection.
