Vairagya Shataka 1.62

1.62 Bhartrihari

paribhramasi kiṃ mudhā kvacana citta viśrāmyatāṃ | svayaṃ bhavati yadyathā bhavati tattathā nānyathā | atītamananusmarannapi ca bhāvya-saṅkalpayann | atarkita-samāgamānanubhavāmi bhogānaham ||

Mind, why do you wander about in vain? Rest somewhere. Whatever comes about of itself, as it comes, so it is, and not otherwise. Not dwelling on the past, not planning the future, I enjoy the experiences that come unlooked for.

Accepting what comes is not giving up on effort or on getting help. Do what is in your hands; if worry is constant, talk to someone, Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering is replaying the past and rehearsing the future. Letting the mind rest in what is actually here, and accepting what we cannot control, brings relief.

Bhartrihari tells his restless mind to stop wandering: what will be will be, and he takes what comes.
