Vairagya Shataka 1.66

1.66 Bhartrihari

agre gītaṃ sarasa-kavayaḥ pārśvayordākṣiṇātyāḥ | paścāllīlāvalaya-raṇitaṃ cāmara-grāhiṇīnām | yadyastyevaṃ kuru bhava-rasāsvādane lampaṭatvaṃ | no ceccetaḥ praviśa sahasā nirvikalpe samādhau ||

Singing in front, poets of fine taste beside you, southern musicians on either side, behind you the playful jingle of the bracelets of women waving fly-whisks: if you have all this, then by all means be greedy in tasting the world. If not, mind, enter at once the thought-free stillness of samadhi.

Most of us will never have every pleasure we imagine. Instead of living in that half-hungry chase, the poet points to a stillness that does not depend on having it all.

Bhartrihari, half in irony, tells his mind: if you truly have every royal pleasure, enjoy it; otherwise, turn at once to meditation.
