Vairagya Shataka 1.70

1.70 Bhartrihari

pātālamāviśasi yāsi nabho vilaṅghya | diṅ-maṇḍalaṃ bhramasi mānasa cāpalena | bhrāntyāpi jātu vimalaṃ kathamātmanīnaṃ | na brahma saṃsmarasi nirvṛtimeṣi yena ||

Mind, in your fickleness you plunge into the underworld, leap across the sky, wander around the circle of the directions. Why do you never, even by mistake, remember that pure Brahman, your own true good, by which you would find lasting peace?

Meaning today and context

The mind travels everywhere in a single minute yet rarely turns toward what would settle it. Turning attention inward, even briefly, is the beginning of rest.

Bhartrihari chides his mind for roaming everywhere except toward the one thing that would give it rest.
