These rulers are hard to please, their minds as restless as horses; and we have large desires, our minds set on some great reward. Old age takes the body, death takes this dear life. Friend, for the wise there is no other good in the world except tapas.
Tapas means disciplined effort, not punishing the body. Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.
Meaning today and context
Waiting on the moods of the powerful while age and time slip away is a poor bargain. Disciplined inner work is something no one can withhold from you.
Bhartrihari tells a friend that serving kings is futile and life is fleeting, so the wise have no better good than tapas.
