The wish for pleasures has ceased; the respect people gave has slipped away; my peers have gone to heaven, and so, suddenly, have friends dear as life. I rise slowly with a stick, my eyes clouded by thick darkness. Ah, the foolish body still flinches at the danger of death!
Fear of death is natural, and the loneliness of losing friends is real; the verse is not mockery of the old. If death weighs on your mind, talk to someone or call Tele-MANAS 14416.
Meaning today and context
Clinging to life can outlast every reason we once had for it. The verse invites us to make peace with mortality before age forces the question, not to scorn the very old.
Bhartrihari describes extreme old age: pleasures gone, respect gone, friends dead, eyes dim; yet the body still trembles at the thought of death.
