Vairagya Shataka 1.91

1.91 Bhartrihari

kaupīnaṃ śata-khaṇḍa-jarjarataraṃ kanthā punastādṛśī | naiścintyaṃ nirapekṣa-bhaikṣyamaśanaṃ nidrā śmaśāne vane | svātantryeṇa niraṅkuśaṃ viharaṇaṃ svāntaṃ praśāntaṃ sadā | sthairyaṃ yoga-mahotsave'pi ca yadi trailokya-rājyena kim ||

A loincloth worn thin and torn in a hundred places, a patched cloak just the same; freedom from worry; food from alms, depending on no one; sleep in a cremation ground or a forest; roaming freely with no one to check you; a mind always deeply calm; steadiness in the great festival of yoga: if one has these, what use is a kingdom of the three worlds?

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Meaning today and context

Peace of mind and freedom from worry are worth more than any amount of power. Whatever we own, it is the calm within that we are really seeking.

Bhartrihari says that if one has the ascetic's freedom and inner calm, a kingdom of the three worlds is worthless.
