Vairagya Shataka 1.94

1.94 Bhartrihari

mahā-śayyā pṛthvī vipulamupadhānaṃ bhuja-latā | vitānaṃ cākāśaṃ vyajanamanukūlo'yamanilaḥ | śarac-candro dīpo virati-vanitā-saṅga-muditaḥ | sukhī śāntaḥ śete muniratanu-bhūtirnṛpa iva ||

The earth is his great bed, his arm his ample pillow, the sky his canopy, this gentle wind his fan, the autumn moon his lamp; delighted in the company of his bride, Renunciation, the sage sleeps happy and at peace, like a king of no small wealth.

Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.

Meaning today and context

Comfort is partly a matter of how we see. A mind free of wanting finds richness in what is simply there.

Bhartrihari pictures the sage sleeping in the open like a king, with nature providing all his royal comforts.
