Living on alms, free from mixing with crowds, always master of his own actions, devoted to the path that is indifferent to losing and getting, there stands some ascetic: his clothes worn and tattered, picked up from the street, a patched cloak for a seat, without pride, without ego, his one longing the joy of tranquillity.
Renunciation verse: not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities. For most people it means inner detachment and simpler wants, not leaving home or living on alms.
Meaning today and context
Freedom from pride and from the swing of gain and loss is the heart of this portrait. These are inner qualities anyone can grow, whatever they wear.
Bhartrihari describes a true ascetic: living on alms, free of pride and ego, wanting only the joy of calm.
