Vairagya Shataka 1.97

1.97 Bhartrihari

hiṃsā-śūnyamayatna-labhyamaśanaṃ dhātrā marut-kalpitaṃ | vyālānāṃ paśavastṛṇāṅkura-bhujastuṣṭāḥ sthalī-śāyinaḥ | saṃsārārṇava-laṅghana-kṣama-dhiyāṃ vṛttiḥ kṛtā sā nṛṇāṃ | tāmanveṣayatāṃ prayānti satataṃ sarvaṃ samāptiṃ guṇāḥ ||

The Creator gave snakes their food, the air, harmless and won without effort; beasts eat shoots of grass and lie content on the ground. But for human beings, whose minds are able to cross the ocean of worldly life, he made a livelihood such that, in chasing it, all their gifts are forever used up.

Meaning today and context

We have minds capable of the highest understanding, yet spend almost all of them earning a living. The verse asks us to keep some of our best energy for what truly matters.

Bhartrihari contrasts the effortless food given to snakes and beasts with the exhausting livelihood humans chase.
