Yaksha Prashna 1.61

1.61 Yudhishthira to Yaksha

santo digjalamākāśaṃ gaurannaṃ prārthanā viṣam | śrāddhasya brāhmaṇaḥ kālaḥ kathaṃ vā yakṣa manyase ||

"The good are the direction; the sky is water; the cow is food; begging is poison; and a brāhmaṇa is the time for a śrāddha. Or how do you see it, Yaksha?"

Brāhmaṇa and kṣatriya here describe roles of learning and protection in the society of the epic; they are to be read by conduct, never by birth, and never used to rank or exclude anyone. 'Begging is poison' is not a reason to refuse help when you need it: asking for help in need is wise.

Meaning today and context

When you don't know which way to go, look to good people: they are the direction. And depending on begging from others slowly poisons self-respect. Yudhishthira even ends by asking the Yaksha's view, answering with humility.

Yudhishthira answers what is the direction, water, food, poison, and the time for a śrāddha.
