dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayavitṛṣṇasya vaśīkārasaṃjñā vairāgyam ||

Dispassion is the awareness of mastery in one who has no thirst for objects, whether seen or heard of [as promised].

Dispassion here is an inner freedom from craving. It is not advice to abandon family, work or responsibilities, or to deny yourself food, rest or care.

Meaning today and context

Dispassion is not hating the world; it is being free of the thirst that drives you, both for what is in front of you and for what you have only heard promised. It shows up as a quiet sense of being in charge of your wants, not ruled by them.

Definition of vairāgya (dispassion), the second means in 1.12, in its first, lower form.
