Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 1.33

1.33 Patanjali

maitrīkaruṇāmuditopekṣāṇāṃ sukhaduḥkhapuṇyāpuṇyaviṣayāṇāṃ bhāvanātaścittaprasādanam ||

The mind becomes clear by cultivating friendliness towards the happy, compassion towards the suffering, gladness towards the virtuous, and equanimity towards the unvirtuous.

Equanimity towards wrongdoing means not being consumed by anger; it does not mean tolerating abuse or staying silent about harm. If you are in danger, seek help (police 112, women's helpline 181).

Much of our inner turmoil comes from how we react to others: envy at their happiness, coldness at their pain, resentment at their goodness, rage at their faults. Meeting each with the fitting attitude keeps your own mind clear.

The first of several ways (1.33–1.39) to make the mind clear and calm: four attitudes towards four kinds of people.
