tapaḥsvādhyāyeśvarapraṇidhānāni kriyāyogaḥ ||
Discipline (tapas), self-study (svādhyāya) and devotion to the Lord (Īśvara-praṇidhāna) are the yoga of action.
Tapas means steady self-discipline, not punishing the body. Do not fast, cut sleep or hurt yourself in the name of austerity; if you have a health condition, consult a doctor.

Yoga begins not with withdrawal but with three everyday practices: keeping a steady discipline, studying and reflecting on yourself through good texts, and offering your efforts to something larger than yourself. Effort, understanding and surrender together.
Opening of the Sādhana-pāda. Having described samādhi in pāda 1, Patañjali now gives a practice for those not yet settled: the yoga of action (kriyā-yoga), defined as three disciplines.
