Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 2.13

2.13 Patanjali

sati mūle tadvipāko jātyāyurbhogāḥ ||

While the root exists, its ripening is [a particular] birth, length of life and experience.

This describes the text's theory of karma. It must never be used to blame anyone for their birth, illness, disability or misfortune, or to justify caste or exclusion.

Meaning today and context

The text teaches that the conditions we are born into, how long we live and what we go through are shaped by karma rooted in the afflictions. Read today, its practical point is that cutting the root matters more than polishing results.

Continuing 2.12: as long as the root (the kleśas) remains, karma ripens into three results.
