2.16 Patanjali

heyaṃ duḥkhamanāgatam ||

Suffering that has not yet come is to be avoided.

Meaning today and context

Past pain is done and present pain must be lived through, but future pain can often be prevented. Put energy into the habits and choices that stop tomorrow's suffering instead of only reliving yesterday's.

The turning point of the pāda's argument, framed like a physician's diagnosis: what is to be avoided (heya) is suffering that has not yet come.
