ahiṃsāsatyāsteyabrahmacaryāparigrahā yamāḥ ||

Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, brahmacarya [restraint of desire] and non-possessiveness are the restraints.

Brahmacarya here means restraint and moderation of desire; it is not a demand for celibacy on anyone, and never a reason for shame about sexuality.

Meaning today and context

Before any technique, yoga asks you not to harm, not to lie, not to take what is not yours, not to be driven by desire, and not to hoard. A calm mind is hard to build on a life that keeps hurting others.

First limb defined: the five restraints (yamas), ethical commitments in how one treats others.
