avidyā kṣetramuttareṣāṃ prasuptatanuvicchinnodārāṇām ||
Ignorance is the field for the others, whether they are dormant, thinned, interrupted or fully active.
Meaning today and context
A craving or anger may be asleep, weakened, temporarily blocked by another mood, or in full flow. Not feeling it today does not mean it is gone; the root is misperception, and that is what needs work.
Patañjali places ignorance (avidyā) as the ground of the other four afflictions and names four states in which an affliction can exist.
