anityāśuciduḥkhānātmasu nityaśucisukhātmakhyātiravidyā ||

Ignorance is taking the impermanent for permanent, the impure for pure, the painful for pleasant, and what is not the self for the self.

Meaning today and context

We expect jobs, bodies, relationships and pleasures to last, to be flawless, to satisfy for good, and to be who we are. When they change, we are shaken. Seeing them as they are is not pessimism; it is what frees us from being blindsided.

Definition of ignorance (avidyā): four specific kinds of mistaken seeing.
