svaviṣayāsaṃprayoge cittasvarūpānukāra ivendriyāṇāṃ pratyāhāraḥ ||

Pratyāhāra is when the senses, disengaged from their objects, as it were imitate the nature of the mind.

Withdrawing the senses is a meditative practice, not advice to cut off people, food or daily life. Intensive meditation can bring up distressing experiences. If you live with trauma, psychosis or severe depression, practise under guidance and alongside your clinician; if you feel overwhelmed, call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7). Meditation is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.

Meaning today and context

When the mind turns inward, the senses follow it instead of chasing every notification, sound and craving. Pratyāhāra is choosing where attention goes rather than being pulled.

Fifth limb defined: withdrawal of the senses (pratyāhāra), the bridge from outer to inner practice.
