Meaning today and context
We assume we are our thoughts, moods and opinions. When a thought is criticised we feel attacked; when a mood passes through we say 'I am anxious'. Noticing that you are the one aware of the mind, not the mind itself, gives room to breathe.
Definition of asmitā, the 'I-am' affliction: the seer and the instrument of seeing are taken to be one.
