Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 3.47

3.47 Patanjali

grahaṇasvarūpāsmitānvayārthavattvasaṃyamādindriyajayaḥ ||

By saṃyama on the grasping, essential nature, I-sense, connectedness and purposefulness [of the senses], mastery over the senses.

This sūtra states what the text claims follows from saṃyama; it is not a feat to attempt or test, and it proves nothing about anyone. Be wary of anyone who sells, demonstrates or promises such powers, or asks for money or obedience in return. Patanjali himself calls these powers obstacles to samādhi (3.37).

Meaning today and context

As a claim of total mastery this belongs to the list of powers; the ordinary, usable lesson is the gradual sense-restraint of pratyāhāra (2.54–2.55).

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama; it parallels 3.44, now for the senses.
