Yoga Sutras of Patanjali 3.49

3.49 Patanjali

sattvapuruṣānyatākhyātimātrasya sarvabhāvādhiṣṭhātṛtvaṃ sarvajñātṛtvaṃ ca ||

For one who has only the discernment of the difference between sattva and puruṣa, sovereignty over all states of being and all-knowingness.

This sūtra states what the text claims follows from saṃyama; it is not a feat to attempt or test, and it proves nothing about anyone. Be wary of anyone who sells, demonstrates or promises such powers, or asks for money or obedience in return. Patanjali himself calls these powers obstacles to samādhi (3.37).

Meaning today and context

This is the text's highest claim of power. Anyone presenting themselves as all-knowing or all-powerful is a reason for caution, not devotion.

Part of the list of powers (vibhūti) that Patanjali says follow from saṃyama; this is its culmination, just before the call to give up even this (3.50).
