4.23 Patanjali

draṣṭṛdṛśyoparaktaṃ cittaṃ sarvārtham ||

The mind, coloured by both the seer and the seen, [takes on] every object.

Meaning today and context

The mind blends awareness and content so seamlessly that we take our moods to be ourselves. Seeing this blending is where discernment begins.

The mind stands between seer and seen and is coloured by both; that is why it can grasp any object, and also why it is so easily mistaken for the self.
