Adhyāya 5, Brāhmaṇa 2

5.2.1 Prajapati to Gods, humans and asuras

trayāḥ prājāpatyāḥ prajāpatau pitari brahmacaryamūṣuḥ | devā manuṣyā asurāḥ | uṣitvā brahmacaryaṃ devā ūcurbravītu no bhavāniti | tebhyo haitadakṣaramuvāca da iti | vyajñāsiṣṭā3 iti | vyajñāsiṣmeti hocuḥ | dāmyateti na āttheti | omiti hovāca vyajñāsiṣṭeti ||

The three kinds of Prajapati's offspring, gods, humans and asuras, lived as students with their father Prajapati. Having completed their studentship, the gods said, 'Please teach us, sir.' He spoke to them the syllable 'da' and asked, 'Have you understood?' They said, 'We have understood. You told us: restrain yourselves (damyata).' 'Yes,' he said, 'you have understood.'

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Each of us hears the teaching we most need. For those who have plenty of pleasure and power, the lesson is self-restraint.

हर व्यक्ति वही उपदेश सुनता है जिसकी उसे सबसे अधिक ज़रूरत है। जिनके पास सुख और शक्ति भरपूर है, उनके लिए सीख है संयम।

Brihadaranyaka 5.2.1. The gods, humans and asuras study under their father Prajapati. Asked for teaching, he says the single syllable 'da' to the gods, who understand it as 'restrain yourselves' (damyata), and he approves.

5.2.2 Prajapati to Gods, humans and asuras

अथ हैनं मनुष्या ऊचुर्ब्रवीतु नो भवानिति । तेभ्यो हैतदेवाक्षरमुवाच द इति । व्यज्ञासिष्टा३ इति । व्यज्ञासिष्मेति होचुः । दत्तेति न आत्थेति । ओमिति होवाच व्यज्ञासिष्टेति ॥

atha hainaṃ manuṣyā ūcurbravītu no bhavāniti | tebhyo haitadevākṣaramuvāca da iti | vyajñāsiṣṭā3 iti | vyajñāsiṣmeti hocuḥ | datteti na āttheti | omiti hovāca vyajñāsiṣṭeti ||

Then the humans said to him, 'Please teach us, sir.' He spoke to them the same syllable 'da' and asked, 'Have you understood?' They said, 'We have understood. You told us: give (datta).' 'Yes,' he said, 'you have understood.'

फिर मनुष्यों ने उनसे कहा, 'भगवन्, हमें उपदेश दीजिए।' उन्होंने उनसे वही अक्षर 'द' कहा, और पूछा, 'क्या समझे?' उन्होंने कहा, 'समझ गए। आपने हमसे कहा: दान करो।' उन्होंने कहा, 'हाँ, तुम समझ गए।'

Giving here is generosity within one's means, not a demand to give beyond what one can afford or to anyone who asks for money.

यहाँ दान का अर्थ अपनी सामर्थ्य के भीतर उदारता है, अपनी क्षमता से बाहर देना या पैसे माँगने वाले हर किसी को देना नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

For humans, inclined to hold on to what they have, the lesson is to give. Sharing what we have loosens the grip of greed and connects us to others.

जो अपने पास का थामे रहना चाहते हैं, उन मनुष्यों के लिए सीख है देना। जो हमारे पास है उसे बाँटना लोभ की पकड़ ढीली करता है और हमें दूसरों से जोड़ता है।

Brihadaranyaka 5.2.2. The humans ask Prajapati for teaching; he says 'da', and they understand it as 'give' (datta).

5.2.3 Prajapati to Gods, humans and asuras

atha hainamasurā ūcurbravītu no bhavāniti | tebhyo haitadevākṣaramuvāca da iti | vyajñāsiṣṭā3 iti | vyajñāsiṣmeti hocuḥ | dayadhvamiti na āttheti | omiti hovāca vyajñāsiṣṭeti | tadetadevaiṣā daivī vāganuvadati stanayitnurda da da iti | damyata datta dayadhvamiti | tadetattrayaṃ śikṣeddamamdānamdayāmiti ||

Then the asuras said to him, 'Please teach us, sir.' He spoke to them the same syllable 'da' and asked, 'Have you understood?' They said, 'We have understood. You told us: be compassionate (dayadhvam).' 'Yes,' he said, 'you have understood.' This is what the divine voice, the thunder, repeats: 'Da! Da! Da!', that is, restrain yourselves, give, be compassionate. One should learn these three: self-restraint, giving and compassion.

'Asuras' are a mythic figure for the cruel tendency in anyone, never a group of people.

'असुर' किसी के भी भीतर की क्रूर प्रवृत्ति का पौराणिक प्रतीक हैं, कभी कोई जन-समूह नहीं।

Meaning today and contextआज के लिए अर्थ और संदर्भ

Self-control, generosity and compassion are a complete ethic in three words. Each of us has some of the god, the human and the asura in us, and needs all three.

संयम, उदारता और करुणा, तीन शब्दों में पूरा नैतिक जीवन। हम सबमें देव, मनुष्य और असुर तीनों का कुछ अंश है, और हमें तीनों गुण चाहिए।

Brihadaranyaka 5.2.3. The asuras ask Prajapati for teaching; he says 'da', and they understand it as 'be compassionate' (dayadhvam). The text adds that the thunder repeats 'da da da': restrain, give, be compassionate.
