Adhyāya 8, Khaṇḍa 14

8.14.1 Upanishadic seer

ākāśo vai nāma nāmarūpayornirvahitā | te yadantarā tadbrahma tadamṛtaṃ sa ātmā | prajāpateḥ sabhāṃ veśma prapadye yaśo'haṃ bhavāmi brāhmaṇānāṃ yaśo rājñāmyaśo viśām | yaśo'hamanuprāpatsi | sa hāhaṃ yaśasāṃ yaśaḥ | śyetamadatkamadatkaṃ śyetaṃ lindu mābhigāṃ lindu mābhigām ||

What is called space is the bearer of name and form. That within which they are is Brahman; that is the immortal; that is the Self. I go to Prajāpati's assembly hall, his home. I am the glory of the brahmins, the glory of the kings, the glory of the people. I have attained glory. I am the glory of glories. May I never go to the grey, toothless, toothless, grey, slimy thing; may I never go to the slimy thing.

The mention of brahmins, kings and people reflects the society of its time; the prayer is to be the glory of all, and never ranks anyone by birth.

Meaning today and context

Beyond every name and form we wear, roles, titles and appearances, lies the one deathless Self. The closing lines are an obscure prayer, traditionally read as a plea not to be caught again in another birth.

Chandogya 8.14.1: a mantra declaring space the bearer of name and form, and Brahman, the immortal Self, as what lies within them; the seeker prays to reach Prajāpati's hall and become the glory of all.
