6.10.1 Uddalaka Aruni to Shvetaketu

imāḥ somya nadyaḥ purastātprācyaḥ syandante paścātpratīcyaḥ | tāḥ samudrātsamudramevāpiyanti | sa samudra eva bhavati | tā yathā tatra na viduriyamahamasmīyamahamasmīti ||

"These rivers, dear one, the eastern ones flow toward the east, the western ones toward the west. From ocean they go into the ocean itself, and become just the ocean. And just as there they do not know, 'I am this one, I am that one,'

Meaning today and context

Rivers rise from the sea as rain and return to it. Our different paths, directions and identities come from one source and flow back into it.

Chandogya 6.10.1: Uddalaka's second illustration: rivers flowing east and west merge into the ocean and no longer know which river they were.
